Dr. Petros Gikas

Professor, Chemical Engineer
Director of the Design of Environmental Processes Laboratory

School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete

Dr. Petros Gikas, is Professor at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete, and director of the “Design of Environmental Processes Laboratory”. His research interest is focused on municipal and industrial wastewater treatment with emphasis on energy utilization, water reuse processes and the field of water resources management. In particular, it deals with the design and scale-up of innovative processes for the treatment of wastewater and biosolids, with low energy consumption and low cost, while utilizing the energy content of biosolids by anaerobic digestion and gasification.

Prof. Gikas has been involved, as partner or principal investigator, in several international research programs, financially supported at the National and European levels. Among others, he is currently working on the development of a novel positive energy wastewater treatment process, by coordinating the project LIFE16 ENV/GR/000298, “New Concept for Energy Self-Sustainable Wastewater Treatment Process and Biosolids Management”. At the same time, he is the principal investigator in a research program funded from the region of Crete, Greece for a pilot scale investigation for energy production from solid waste remaining, using the gasification process, which will be constructed in the Circular Economy Park of Heraklion, Crete. Furthermore, he is a principal investigator on the project “Upgrade of WWTPs for the management of increased demands and the reduction of the operational cost” (2021-2023) funded by INTERREG Greece - Cyprus.

Since 2005, Prof. Gikas teaches the three undergraduate (mandatory) and two postgraduate courses at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, while during 2014-2019 he had been teaching the postgraduate course “Wastewater Management” at the Hellenic Open University. Dr. Petros Gikas has supervised a large number of PhD / Master / Undergraduate student’s theses at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece and at the Hellenic Open University of Greece. Furthermore, Prof. Gikas has served in numerous PhD examination Committees worldwide.

Prof. Gikas is the author of more than 60 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, with a number of citations of 2451 and an h-index of 24 (i10-Index: 41), and he has presented his findings in more than 140 conferences. Prof. Gikas is also serving as reviewer in more than 30 scientific journals.
